Estimation of averted damage through mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident in the Republic of Belarus

Abstract

A total of 17 billion US dollars has been spent by Belarus on mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. As a result of the undertaken activities, the cumulative dose among the affected population of Belarus over 1986-2005 is found to be 24000 man-Sv instead of the expected 176000 man-Sv. The averted collective dose is estimated to be 152000 man-Sv. Taking into account the international nominal fatality probability coefficient for the population and estimated cost of one-year living for an average person, the averted detriment for human health through radiation dose reduction based on scientifically grounded protective actions, is estimated to be 45.2 billion US dollars, equivalent in money. The saving resulting from averting radiation effects for human health is more than 27 billion US dollars.
